Child Health and nutrition in Africa

Improving child health in Africa: challenges and commitments

In multiple regions of Africa, securing child health and nutrition during adolescence remains a major challenge in light of the lack of health care. The right of the child to health and nutrition, and access to an adequate diet, is one of the most prominent internationally recognized human rights, protected by international treaties and conventions related to the right to life.

The Millennium Development Goals focus on poverty, hunger, child mortality and maternal health, and seek to address serious diseases such as HIV / AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. But the bitter reality shows an increase in mortality rates among young children, especially in Africa, where the urgent need to improve health care remains.

In developed countries such as Sweden, the proportion of children at risk of dying before their first birthday is 1% or less, while in developing countries, this rate exceeds 10%, reflecting the large gap between rich and poor and between urban and rural areas within those countries.

The world wants to achieve its commitments and ideals regarding child health, but the reality remains an enormous challenge that requires intensifying efforts to provide adequate and equal health care to all children in Africa and beyond.

Improving children’s health is a global progress and ongoing challenges

The world’s efforts to reduce child mortality are witnessing remarkable progress, with the number of deaths of children under the age of five globally falling from 12 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2011. This is due to the fact that the global child mortality rate has decreased by 41% since 1990.

The main causes of mortality of children under five, such as pneumonia, complications of premature birth, diarrhea, complications of childbirth, malaria, demonstrate the urgent need to improve the health care and proper nutrition of children.

Despite the progress achieved in some regions of Africa, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, the challenges of child mortality remain. While that region has seen an accelerated decline in mortality rates, it still has the highest child mortality rates. In 2011 alone, more than 3 million deaths were recorded among children under the age of five in that region, equivalent to the death of about 9,000 children per day.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the most affected regions, with one in 9 children dying before the age of five, compared to 1 in 16 in South Asia. These tragic figures call for an immediate global response to strengthen efforts to improve the health and well-being of children in these areas of need.
