Born into a Muslim family, Basidu grew up in an environment far removed from the teachings of Islam. Harsh life circumstances forced him to live away from his family at a young age. Raised amidst pagan traditions, he became deeply involved in sorcery, developed a dependence on alcohol, and repeatedly returned to it after every brief attempt at sobriety.
A Turning Point in Basidu’s Life
When Afrika Hayat Association, in collaboration with the International Aid Campaign, began constructing a mosque in the village of Bowari Timé in Benin, the chosen site was remarkably close to Basidu’s home. During the foundation-laying ceremony, one of the village imams approached Basidu and said with conviction, “Basidu, this mosque will be near you, and it is for you to start praying in and taking care of.”
The imam’s bold and unexpected words left Basidu in deep thought. Stunned by the imam’s confidence, Basidu eventually accepted his invitation.
The Imam’s Words Resonate in Basidu’s Heart
Returning home, Basidu couldn’t shake the imam’s words from his mind. He described them as a “message from the ancestors,” as if they carried a deeper call for change and reflection on a life that had veered far from its path.
A Visit to a Muslim Friend
Determined to understand more, Basidu visited a Muslim friend in the neighboring village of Boanri. He shared what had happened at the mosque’s groundbreaking ceremony and the thoughts that had begun to preoccupy him.
Listening attentively, his friend responded, “This is not a message from the ancestors, but from Allah, the Almighty. It’s an invitation to return to the straight path. Don’t let anyone beat you to praying in that mosque.”
These words brought peace to Basidu’s heart and encouragement to take the next step.

On the day the mosque was inaugurated, Basidu stood before the imam and declared the testimony of faith, openly repenting for the years he spent lost in darkness. It was a defining moment in his life, marking the beginning of a journey illuminated by faith and hope.
From Darkness to Light
Basidu’s life underwent a profound transformation, thanks to a heartfelt message from a compassionate imam who believed in the power of change. The new mosque became more than just a place of worship—it served as the cornerstone for a life filled with guidance and blessings.
