Lighting Quranic Schools –khalawat-project Chad

Overview
Details

⭕Chad, a predominantly Muslim country and one of the poorest in the world according to recent statistics, is also known as a land of Quran memorization. Over one million people have memorized the Quran, a reflection of the population’s deep connection to learning and preserving the Quran.

📚 Students memorize the Quran through a system known as Quranic schools (“Khalwa”). They dedicate themselves to these schools to complete the memorization program, which takes between 3 to 5 years.

⭕ There are more than 7,000 Quranic schools spread across Chad. Due to the extreme poverty, these schools face incredibly difficult conditions. Students often study in dilapidated structures or under trees near walls, gathering around a teacher while sitting on the ground. In the evenings, students collect firewood with their small hands before sunset to light a fire 🔥, around which they study and revise at night.

🟢 To ease the burden on these students and support them in memorizing the Quran, we propose a project to light these Quranic schools at night using solar-powered lighting units. This would provide a safer alternative to the hazardous firelight, saving students the effort of collecting firewood and protecting them from the health risks posed by open flames.
