Rules and Requirements for Offering Udhiyah (Eid Sacrifice)

Udhiyah is not just meat to be distributed. It’s a special moment that reminds many they’re not forgotten. In some of the remote villages we travel through, Eid sacrifice is the sole decent meal people look forward to all year.

As Eid al-Adha 2025 approaches, some questions arise: Who is eligible to make a sacrifice? What should the animal be like? What should the person offering it be careful about so that it will be accepted by Allah? These are not just technical questions — they are a result of a genuine desire to do this sacred act correctly.

Rules and Requirements for Offering Udhiyah (Eid Sacrifice)

Rules and Requirements for Offering Udhiyah

We at AFRIKA HAYAT association do not just preach the rules, we implement them on the ground. We are of the opinion that Udhiyah is not a ritual that comes from the books alone; it is a manifestation of mercy and kindness performed with heart.

We realize the procedure of Udhiyah begins with a pure intention, grows through the act of sacrifice, and is finalized when it reaches someone who may have the opportunity to eat meat only once a year. For this reason, we expound the guidelines in simple and clear-cut ways — so that all can be able to connect with this act of worship, regardless of what their circumstances may be.

Conditions for Men Who Intend to Offer Udhiyah

Rules and Requirements for Offering Udhiyah

If you are going to offer a sacrifice, begin with honesty and open heart. These are the necessary conditions to keep in mind:

  • The animal must be from livestock: camels, cattle, sheep, or goats.
  • The animal must meet the age requirement: at least 6 months for sheep, and 2 years for cattle.
  • The animal must be free from obvious defects: such as blindness, severe limping, extreme thinness, or obvious illness.
  • The sacrifice must be performed within the correct time: following the Eid prayer and before sundown on the third day of Tashreeq (13th Dhul-Hijjah).

Can Women Make a Sacrifice?

Yes, definitely. It is allowed for any Muslim woman, whether married or unmarried, to perform a Udhiyah. The wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) would also perform sacrifices. Islam does not distinguish between men and women in this aspect.

Among the people whom we serve, we find women quite often who save from their meager earnings to put towards a sacrifice, or who offer it in the memory of a beloved one. True generosity is not measured by how much money you give, but by how much love you put in.

Conditions for Women Sponsoring Udhiyah:

The same conditions hold good for women as for men:

  • A pure intention for the sake of Allah.
  • A healthy animal, slaughtered at the right time.
  • It’s best that she doesn’t cut her hair or nails during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah if she’s going to make a sacrifice.

And if her family is already offering a sacrifice through her husband or relatives, she still gets the reward.

Recommended Etiquette for Those Offering a Sacrifice:

  • Be sincere in your intention.
  • Do not clip your hair and nails during the first ten days if you’re the person slaughtering.
  • Remain in a relaxed mood and stay attentive while slaughtering.
  • Do not sell any part of the animal – skin and head, in the process.
  • Distribute the meat sparingly: one-third to relatives, one-third to be a present, and one-third as an act of charity.

Udhiyah Project 2025 – Their Eid is Joy, Your Sacrifice is Life

Eid al-Adha is a powerful message — one that reminds us to draw near to Allah and to be kind to others. At Afrika hayat association , we live this message on the ground. We see it in the eyes of mothers who reside in remote villages, in the tears of gratitude when meat reaches those who have gone months without eating it.

We’ve launched the 2025 Udhiyah Project to offer you the opportunity to fulfill this great Sunnah. Your sacrifice will be slaughtered in its time, given out to those in need of it most, and recorded as an enduring good act in your book of reward, insha’Allah.

Don’t let this Eid pass without leaving your mark.

Whatever good you send forth for yourselves – you will find it with Allah.
