Through its initiatives, Afrika Hayat Association serves as a beacon of light, offering these women new opportunities and turning sewing into a tool for empowerment and a pathway to a better future.

Highlighting the Journey of Sakina Mohammed Zaid

Sakina Mohammed Zaid, a 33-year-old woman born and raised in Tripoli, Libya, holds a master’s degree in Arabic Literature and Criticism. She worked as an Arabic language teacher at Dangiso Institution for both middle and high school levels before transitioning to a marketing role at Nikiva Company for Medical Equipment and Solutions.

Sakina’s passion for sewing began in her childhood. At just ten years old, she held a needle and thread for the first time. Despite not receiving formal training, Sakina took a short personal course to learn the basics of sewing machines. From there, she relied on her determination and years of self-learning and hands-on experience to refine her skills.

From Passion to Training

In June 2022, Sakina decided to take a bold step by offering her first sewing training course at the Basma Sewing and Handcraft Development Center. This endeavor was a significant challenge for her, but she successfully trained 50 participants, including 7 men and 43 women. The course was so impactful that one of her female trainees excelled and eventually became a sewing trainer herself.

Afrika Hayat Association’s Support for Women

Motivated by her success, Sakina launched a special training program in N’Djamena in partnership with Afrika Hayat Association to teach 25 women sewing skills. The training spanned three months, during which the association provided each participant with a sewing machine as additional support. This initiative offered these women a valuable opportunity to integrate into the workforce and gain self-reliance.
